20 Years of Pride, Struggle, and Hope: CAEC Celebrates Two Decades of Commitment

In 2025, Collectif Arc-En-Ciel (CAEC) reaches a historic milestone: twenty years of mobilisation for the rights and dignity of LGBTQIA+ people in Mauritius.
What began as a small group of determined activists has today become a national reference organisation, a pillar of the fight for equality and social justice.

From grassroots activism to a national voice

Since its creation in 2005, CAEC has left its mark on Mauritian history through courageous actions and bold positions.
From organising the first Pride March on Mauritian soil, to advocating for more inclusive laws, promoting the rights of trans people, and providing psychological support to LGBTQIA+ youth, the organisation has managed to turn challenges into concrete progress.

“Collectif Arc-En-Ciel has never stopped fighting to make visible what was hidden, to give a voice to those who were being silenced,” explained a committee member.

A symbolic evening to mark the two decades

On 15 May 2025, the Caudan Arts Centre hosted a commemorative evening that brought together activists, allies, artists, and partners.
This celebration, held under the banner of pride and gratitude, retraced the key milestones of the collective’s history while paying tribute to those who paved the way.

In his speech, Dimitry Ah-Yu, President of CAEC, reminded attendees of the profound meaning behind this commemoration:

“We are celebrating twenty years of courage, resilience, and hope. But above all, we are celebrating the strength of a community that refuses to be erased.”

He also addressed political decision-makers:

“We are part of this nation. We contribute, we create, we love. What we are asking for is not privilege, but the same rights as all Mauritian citizens.”

Important progress, but still a long road ahead

While the repeal of Article 250 of the Penal Code was a historic victory for human dignity, CAEC reminds us that the struggle is far from over.
Many LGBTQIA+ people continue to face rejection, harassment, violence, and exclusion—particularly in access to employment, healthcare, and justice.

“Social change will not happen on its own; it requires political courage and real commitment,” emphasised Dimitry Ah-Yu.
CAEC is therefore calling on the authorities to turn promises of equality into concrete actions, in order to build a society where every Mauritian can live freely and without fear.

A collective that continually evolves

Beyond activism, CAEC has transformed over the years into a complete community-support structure.
The organisation has launched new mental health initiatives, trained psychologists on LGBTQIA+ realities, and is actively involved in advocating for legal recognition of trans and non-binary people.
On the regional stage, it has also taken part in African human rights dialogues, strengthening Mauritian visibility at the international level.

An anniversary celebrated with the community

To mark its 20th anniversary, CAEC has planned a series of activities throughout the year:

  • a documentary screening retracing two decades of struggle and pride;
  • community gatherings to share experiences and honour pioneers;
  • a public campaign highlighting the faces and voices of LGBTQIA+ people in Mauritius.

These celebrations aim not only to honour the past but also to inspire the future.

A clear vision for the road ahead

As Mauritius continues its journey toward a more inclusive society, CAEC remains guided by a simple conviction:

A country where everyone can love, exist, and thrive without fear is possible.

Twenty years after its creation, Collectif Arc-En-Ciel continues to carry a message of hope, pride, and freedom, true to its mission: building an island where human rights fully include LGBTQIA+ rights.
